Vila Real has a spectacular location between the gorges of the Corgo and the Cabril Rivers. The Marão and the Alvão mountains overlook the town on the west side.
An iron bridge crosses the Corgo river, linking the old town with the new one. Just outside the town itself, the Mateus Palace is located - designed by the Italian Nazoni.
In the town there is a public university. Its forestry and winemaking courses have wide national recognition.
A casino in Chaves
In the district of Vila Real you will also find a popular casino. Some 50km northest of Vila Real city is the Hotel Casino Chaves - located only 8km from the border of Spain.
Wine from the region of Norte
