Gaia is a city in northern Portugal - located in the Porto district, south of Porto. Gaia, together with Porto and other 12 municipalities makes up the commonly designated Porto Metropolitan Area.
Gaia is well known for its "lodges" (locally known as "caves") where the world famous Port wine is stored and aged. The lodges have become a major tourist attraction.
The views all over Porto and Gaia (devided by the river Douro) are stunning and there is many a vantage point on the hillier areas. One of the first sights to greet you on the Gaia side of the Ponte de Dom Luis bridge is the Mosteiro da Serra do Pilar with its round church that sits atop the hill where the bridge meets the land.
