Tavira is located in the south of Portugal - in the region of Algarve. Here you will find 205 km of

Tavira is situated in the east of the Algarve on the south coast of Portugal, 30 km east of Faro.
The population are mainly supporting a military base, whilst the surrounding area is still very rural and undeveloped. This is now changing due to the demands of the tourist industry.
Tavira along with Lagos is one of the most architecturally attractive towns in the Algarve and its origin dates back to around 2.000 BC.
Like most of the Algarve its buildings were destroyed by the Great Earthquake of 1755. The town has since been rebuilt with many fine 18th Century buildings - along with its 37 churches!
A Roman bridge links the two parts of the town across the River Gilão.
The beach for this town is reached by a ferryboat - that takes the visitor to the long sandy island (Ilha de Tavira).
The island and beaches can also be reached from the nearby footbridge in Santa Luzia.
In recent years the town has attracted more and more visitors and house prices have increased sharply. The opening of new golf courses in the near vicinity has also had an effect.
Golf Benamor Golf course lies just outside of Tavira, and is the first golf course to open east of Faro, the capital of the Algarve. The course has won several awards as the best maintained course in Portugal. Benamore Golf course is undulating but not hilly, offering views over the mountains to one side and the sea to the other.
