Setúbal is a city located on the northern bank of the Sado river estuary approximately 40 Km south of Lisbon. Setúbal and its surrounding area are awash with history dating back to before the Roman period, indeed it is said that the town was founded by a relative of Noah. Setúbal has become the third largest port in Portugal. It lies to the south of Lisbon and a good motorway provides easy access. The town of Setúbal is attractive with many pedestrian streets, gardens and interesting shops.
In recent years, development of the coast between Setubal and Lisbon has resulted in an array of high quality golf courses including one of Portugal's most popular example at Aroeira.
Tourism What used to be an important center of Portugal's fishing industry (mainly sardines) has today become a town with big opportunity in tourism. The nearby coast of the Arrábida natural park offers beautiful beaches and unspoilt nature. A colony of dolphins lives in the Sado River.
Across the river from Setúbal lies the peninsula of Tróia, where several high-rise luxury resorts were built and abandoned after the realization they were being constructed on sinking, unstable land!
The 16th-17th century fortress of Setúbal - Castelo de São Felipe - has been turned into a luxury "pousada" (hotel).
Wine from the region of Lisbon
Portugal produces some of the world's finest, oldest, unique and highest value-added wines.
The country has a large variety of native breeds - about 285 - producing a very wide
variety of different wines with distinctive personality.
