Quarteira - a tourist centre Municipal holiday: Ascension Day (celebrated 40 days after Easter) Population: 16.000 inhabitants in the city proper and in the entire municipality of Loulé a total population of 62.500 inhabitants. Quarteira is located in the Algarve in southern Portugal, just 25km west of Faro - next-door to Vilamoura, a popular tourist destination in the Algarve. Once a simple fishing village, Quarteira has become a cosmopolitan tourist centre. It acts as a dormitory for the many employees and companies engaged in the tourist industry. The architecture is dominated by tall apartment blocks. During the summer season the long open beach and the promenade with its shops and restaurants is quite busy. Every Wednesday a local fair and gipsy market attracts people from all over the region. Quarteira's past identity can be glimpsed in a 17th century church and a few houses decorated with coloured borders.
