Vilamoura an exceptional leisure resort
Vilamoura (in the municipality of Loulé, in the Algarve) is a purpose built resort and Marina.
It was started from scratch by a wealthy banker from Lisbon in 1974.
Covering some 20 km² of land (and still expanding),it is one of Europes largest tourist beach
resorts, and the largest private leisure resort in
Portugal. It houses five (!) first class
golf courses, a modern
casino, a Marina and an airstrip.
Vilamoura is a modern resort where everything has been planned and designed with your pleasure
in mind. The huge range of facilities available, makes it a very popular destination for families
seeking stress-free fun. The nearest airport is in Faro, 15km away.
The Marina
At the heart of Vilamoura is the marina which has the capacity to berth over 1,000 vessels. The
marina is surrounded by large Hotels and Luxury holiday homes as well as a large casino and numerous
restaurants and bars.
Tourism in Vilamoura is extensive and well-developed, with many different resorts with ratings from
3 star to 5 star.
Vilamoura is originally a Roman fishing town and there is a preserved Roman Site - the ruins include
baths in which the mariners used to bathe. There is also a Museum providing an insight to the area's
past.
