of Alentejo. This
region is the largest in Portugal and yet it is the least populated. Most land is agricultural
or with rolling plains dotted with olive trees and cork oaks in the south, and with granite
hills that border Spain in the north-east. A land yet to be explored. Bordering the
Algarve -
and enjoying the same temperate Mediterranean climate - the Alentejo is yet an almost undiscovered
region by those overseas buyers hunting for popular
properties in Portugal. This area also has
some of the best quality
wine in Portugal.
Alentejo region is possibly one of the most beautiful in Portugal, you'll find almost untouched
medieval villages, farming communities, national parks and even a long coastline (from the port of
Sines, to Cape de Sao Vicente). To feed the water needs of this considerable area, a number of public
dams have been constructed - most notably the Alqueva Dam.
Alentejos main cities beside the regions capital
Évora, are
Portalegre, Beja
and Sines, which
also are some of the many historical main cities in Portugal.
