Properties in Portugal
Most properties in Portugal have been built since the 1970s - and especially since the turn of the millennium.
This has caused historical areas of Lisbon and Porto and other cities to become depopulated - though the younger
generations today have a growing interest on buying and repairing these old buildings. The trendy

Own or rent properties in Portugal?
Over two thirds of all properties in Portugal is owned by the resident. House renting is more common in Lisbon,
Porto, Coimbra and Aveiro - having a large number of students and foreign residents. Other areas
where apartments are usually rent are sea resorts and in the
Algarve.

Luxury housing is an important market in Portugal, especially in the larger cities, in Algarve, Cascais,
Estoril and the South Bank of the Tejo river, as well as in certain areas on the
Silver Coast.

There are more houses in Portugal than the total population of 10 million individuals (!). Half of the
Portuguese families own a country house or a holiday home. Also many Europeans choose to regularly
spend their holidays here, and in many cases end up
buying a property in Portugal - either as an
