Alentejo is the driest and hottest region in Portugal. The project was made to produce hydroelectic power, irrigation for farms in the surrounding area, as well as a large reservoir where several tourist ventures are also being built.
The 96 metre high floodgates of the Alqueva dam were closed on February 8, 2002, and the hydroelectric power station started working in 2004. The village of Alqueva, gives the project the name. It is the site of the biggest ostrich farm in Portugal.
Granja Amareleja wine
The wine region of Granja Amareleja is centered around the town of Mourão. The region has the second tier IPR classification, and may some day be promoted to DOC. The combination of the region's schist-based soils and harsh climate has the potential to produce bold, full bodied, spicy red wines. The principle grapes of the Granja Amareleja region include Manteudo, Moreto, Periquita, Rabod de Ovelha, Roupeiro and Trincadeira. |
