Leiria is located in the central Portugal - in region Centro - a region of diversified landscapes.

There is also the mountainous inland - dominated by the Serra da Estrela mountain. The green, rugged landscape
of this region is crisscrossed by rivers.
Outdoor activities are fishing, horse-back riding, hiking, tennis and canoeing (and, in the Winter season,
skiing in Serra da Estrela).

Leiria is a city and a municipality in the Centro region of Portugal, located halfway between Lisbon and Porto. The historic city centre spreads between the castle hill and the river Lis.
Leiria was initially named Collipo by the Romans. Conquered by moors and later retook by Dom Afonso Henriques in the 12th Century. In 1135 he ordered a strong castle to be built. The Portuguese King Dom Dinis decided to improve the castle defences in the 14th Century. He also turned it into a royal residence for himself and his Queen, Isabel de Aragon.The historic city centre spreads between the castle hill and the river Lis.
Leiria has an economy concentrated on services and light industries. It has several industries related with plastics and moulds, as well as animal food, milling, cement, and civil construction, among other light industries.
Euro 2004
An important facility is the Dr Magalhães Pessoa Stadium - situated close to Leiria castle. This modern stadium was built for the 2004 European Football Championship (Euro 2004), and has a capacity for 25,000 people.
