Town Holiday: June 1.
Population in Beja: 22.000 inhabitants. Population in Beja municipality: 35.000 inhabitants.
Beja is the capital of the Alentejo region - a beautiful and still unspoiled region in south Portugal - one of the most important agricultural regions in the country.
The history of Beja reaches back to the roman times - when it became a regional capital under Julius Caesar.
Beja is situated on a hill (277 m) and had an strategic position over the vast plains of the Baixo Alentejo. Moorish arquitecture is visible in the old town and the streets of Beja.
The castle on top of the hill, can be seen from afar and dominates the town. Its granite and marble keep - Torre de Menagem - is the highest in Portugal (40 m). The top of the keep can be accessed via a spiral staircase with 197 steps. Standing on the battlements, one has a sensational panorama-view over the surrounding landscape.
The Saint Francis Convent is converted to a pousada (state-run inn), giving visitors the pleasure of staying in an historical and mystical place.
"Five Love Letters" Beja is best known for a 17th century love affair. A French count (Comte de Saint-Léger), supposedly seduced a nun, named Mariana Alcoforado, who lived in the Nossa Senhora da Conceição Convent, but then left the town and never returned. The nun's grief and anguish were revealed in passionate letters - that ended up being published in Paris in 1669. These "Five Love Letters of a Portuguese Nun" became internationally famous as a classic of romantic literature celebrated for its beautiful lyrics. |
