Population in city proper: 42.000 inhabitants, and in the entire municipality: 56.000 inhabitants.
Évora (a city as well as a municipality) - is situated in the Province of Alentejo (southern Portugal), and is the chief city of the district. The Alentejo Province is a region of wide plains to the south of the Tagus River (Rio Tejo), some 130 km from Lisbon.
This walled city was declared by UNESCO in 1886 as one of their World Heritage Sites. Part of the town is enclosed by ancient walls and has been preserved in its original state, aswell as its monuments dating from various historical periods. Inside the city are many interesting buildings and in the surrounding ountryside ancient archaeological remains can be found.
The region around Évora is scattered with signs of the Roman occupation and even the much older Megaliths, dated between BC 4.000 to 2.000. This region has always been an agricultural area.
Colégio do Espírito Santo The University of Évora, the second oldest in Portugal, was founded in 1559 by Cardinal Infante Dom Henrique - the future king of Portugal - and by the Pope Paul IV. The Colégio do Espírito Santo became famed as a centre of learning and rivalled the University of Coimbra.
